Preparation of a preliminary hydraulic system design for an oil-filled cable installation is relatively simple, but selection of the optimum scheme may be a matter of some complexity. Oil tankage requirements are dependent on the nature of the route profile, on ambient temperatures and other system conditions; an indication of the probable tankage needed for various cables is given. The range of tank capacities of 88 litres to 300 litres gives a wide choice, bearing in mind that within practical limitations of size and weight, the larger the oil pressure tank the lower the cost per unit volume capacity. On the other hand it is economically desirable to concentrate the tankage in large units at the fewest possible positions. Con-versely, the designer must ensure that the cable lengths between feed positions are not so great as to engender excessively high or low transient oil pressures at positions remote from the feed points. There is no hard and fast rule about the maximum length of a single hydraulic section but it is seldom that these section lengths exceed 3 km. Similarly, the maximum permissible difference in level in a hydraulic section is not fixed, but in general the maximum economic difference in head is about 30 m to 40 m.
